Topic: Transmission shaft lube

I'm installing a new clutch and have a new sealed ball bearing pilot bearing installed and new TO bearing. Should I put grease in the small hole in the flywheel where the tip of the trans shaft goes? If so, exactly what kind? Also, should the clutch disc teeth (?) or trans spline be lubed and if so, with what? Lastly, should the TO bearing hub or the smooth part of the trans shaft be lubed and with what? Tried to find the yellow grease with the small fibers and no luck so far. I know the disc, flywheel and pressure plate must be squeaky clean on their surfaces. Thanks in advance!

John

John, Rather than re-typing the info from "Rumbleseat", here is the link on what you should do to lubricate the bushing/bearing. Other good info is contained there re: your clutch replacement. Ken

  39 Ken
Thanks for the Rumbleseat article. I printed the 7 pages for future reference. John

Ken's reference to the Rumbleseat having other good information is greatly understated. Paul Garrigan goes by the handle "Rumbleseat", and has collected tons of hard won knowledge. If you miss noting the link below, it is accessible also from Bill Bentley's Techno Source website. The Rumbleseat's link below is a must have for all who would learn flathead wisdom.

That ball bearing that you install in the flywheel, either should be a bronze bushing, or a Z bearing and be sealed from both sides , and does not reguire lube, its lubed at the factory,
the input shaft that goes though the clutch disc, should not be greased, that will fly off and get on your clutch assembly,
one thing you can do is make sure your splines on the input shaft be very clean, and the clutch disc does not stick on it, just a little lube plate ,on the splines, a VERY LIGHT COATING, just enough to cover the splines, NOT ENOUGH TO FLY OFF.
my 3 cents worth,37RAGTOPMAN an KEEP on TRUCKIN,,!!!

Thanks 39Ken, Oldford2 and Ford38v8 for the rumbleseat link. It was really useful and am making copies for friends.

Thanks 37Ragtop for the advice on the bearing and spline lube. I did get the fully sealed bearing and will lightly lube the spline.
