Topic: Lubricate the U-Joint

Thaks to GM and others who posted in the past about lubricating the U-Joint. I always give it a couple of shots but think I will increase that. On my recent 3900 mile trip in the'37, far from home, I developed a vibration that was related to engine speed. Being rather slow of mind I looked at several things before I thought of the greaese the U-Joint posts. Two tubes of grease later the vibration was gone.

Just be sure that the grease is the low temperature variety. We use Mystik JT-6. This reduces the tendency for the grease to "hollow out" as the u-joint turns. Many neglect to grease the u-joint because the fitting is often hard to reach, particularly with the late type of mount. Oil leakage from the rear of the transmission enters the u-joint housing and forms a grease emulsion that likely is the reason so few joints fail, even when under lubed.

I hear what you are saying. On my 46, whoever installed the u-joint managed to put it in upside down for the zerk fitting is on top. I can feel it's too snug to accomodate the grease gun.

We put them on the top side, too. This requires pulling back the floorboard to get at the fitting. but that is better than neglecting the lube. For the most part, it is nearly impossible to reach the fitting if on the lower side, even with a "needle" on the grease gun we use on 4WD axles. You don't have to refill the joint housing at every oil change. Depending on how much you drive the car, once a season is usually plenty. Lots of those joints go without for years for one reason or another, and give no problems.
