Topic: 21 stud iron head identification

I'm replacing the right cylinder head on my '36 Tudor and found a head with the identical cast-in identifications. Ford script, USA, 40-6049B with a large letter F above the part number. Question is, what does the letter F stand for? Thought it might be a foundry I.D. or commercial use.

Thanks, Tom

40-6049-B is for late 33 thru 35 flat head pistons. the -B is the identifier for cast iron head. If the head has the Ford P/N it is most likely a ford head. the "F" may be a date code or Mfg. code. If the commercial vehicle took a special head the P/N would be different.

The 6049 is for the right hand (passenger side) of the engine. The left side heads are marked "6050". It is important to know that '36 was a transitional year, from flat to domed pistons. The heads for the domed pistons are marked 48 or 68. The "40" heads were used with flat top pistons, and are not interchangeable. Ford used A, B, C, and D over the years, but F doesn't appear as a part number.
