What are the two red jewels (20-30mph & 70-80mph) on my 1948 Mercury 114x dash gauge. I am reassembling the dash after a long spell and have forgotten? Separate gauge cluster (not pictured) comprises amps, temp, fuel & oil pressure. Is the high beam at the bottom of the gauge? (in between 0-100mph)

The answer to your question would be in the Operator's Manual for the 114 Mercury. That is a Canadian model and I have no information on it. Tom

Here is the wiring diagram for 45-48 Merc, and the only lights shown for the speedo is the high beam and instrument lights. I searched the net for pictures of 48 Merc speedos, and didn't find any that has the indicator lenses as shown in your picture. Are there any numbers on the back of the speedo? My '46 Ford Coupe has three hole in the back of the speedo housing, high beam and instrument lights. How many holes in the back if your speedo? Does you car have factory signals?

51Woodie gave the answer. The jewels are for the turn signals. I always thought that they were green jewels, so the red color did not ring a bell. Tom

Apologies for my tardy response as I have been ill for several days. Thank you very much for your input and the wiring diagrams. My ‘48 Merc 114x (Canada) has factory turn signals and green jewel indicators within the speedometer. No additional holes have been routed in the the rear of the speedometer housing and the two mysterious red jewels are a factory installation. I am patiently trying in vain to upload a photo displaying the rear of the speedometer but of course, as I need the correct information promptly, the tech gods are once more stifling me.
