Topic: 53 Customline push rod

Just curious if anyone was familiar with a 53 Customline master cylinder assembly. The push rod seems to be missing an extension piece. It is threaded on the end that goes into the cylinder. Brakes were bled through the wheel cylinders, and the bolt behind the pedal was adjusted, but still the pedal seems low.

I'm looking at a drawing of the 1953 master cylinder push rod, part number, AB 2143-C. It is 6-1/4" long and doesn't appear to have any threads. The end of the rod toward the cylinder has a larger diameter than the rod and is flat.

Did you adjust the brakes at each wheel, and the brake pedal free play, which should be about an inch? My '53 diagrams don't show any extension, If you have bled the system properly, you should have a "hard" pedal by at least half way down. If not, air remains in the system. If the fluid level in the master cylinder isn't kept topped off as you do the bleeding, it doesn't take much for some air to enter the system. If you are using DOT5 (silicone) fluid, it is likely you will never have a hard pedal.

Thanks, Richard, for the reply. I guess the possibility of air in the lines remains. Also, I may have the wrong push rod installed. I'll check the specs.

Thanks for the info. I'll double check about air in the lines with more bleeding. I'm using Dot 3 fluid, and all wheels and free play were adjusted.
