I would appreciate some recommendations on what type of motor oil is best for Flat heads: 10W-30 conventional, synthetic blend, full synthetic, oil with extra Zinc etc. I have a recently acquired 1940 Ford with a presumed rebuilt Flat Head (engine runs strong, no smoke). Intended use will be very occasional mostly shorter trips. (I use Molil 1 in everything else I own; would it be good in the 40?)

trmsr, Iv'e been running the cheapest 10W30 convetional in my '37 fordor for 4 yrs now no problems. i figure with no acc oil filter being a good idea to change at least every 1,000mi. why put any exspensive oil in the motor.i don't know if your car leaks, drips,or uses oil even though you say it doesnt smoke. this is a wide open topic which there is all kinds of opinions. even the cheap conventional has a good rateing in circle on back of bottle. i get my oil at oreilleys,tractor supply,theisens,walmart,or any tractor supply depending where you call home. i didn't see any evidence of oil filter canister in pic of your car. i could put a filter on my '37 but at my age and dissabilities i'm savin my old beat up body for other repairs that may arise. good luck. Tom. btw nice '40 and barn. man if it were mine i would have at least a two post lift or a pit. looking back at your text i see your usage of the'40 occational short trips,and not sure climate where you live,and will you drive in weather temps in the 40ish degree you might be better using mobil1. it handles the temp hot and cold better than covn.oil . same, Thanks for the reply, I will be in the 1000 mi oil change camp also which will not be more than one change per year, so cost is not a concern. I guess I really wondered if anyone had a good reason not to use synthetic. As for the lift / pit.... a great idea, I wish I done it years ago assuming I had the time and resources (which actually I didn't) but now the reason for not doing it is too many birthdays. Love the 37's.

trmsr, thanks for the compliment. to be honest i would of bought a '35,36,or '37 chevy,plymouth,or dodge 4 yrs ago when i got my '37 i am the third owner and the owner before me who passed away had owned the '37 since 1956. the car was at a classic car dealership which could take a couple of my toys in on trade.if interested i am on the ford barn as well as "farmertom". there are some pics of my '37 on there. good luck with the '40. If you ask 100 people what oil to use, you will probably get 100 different answers! My recommendations, based of thousands of miles driven in Ford Flathead V-8 powered cars are: Use a name brand, like Pennzoil, SAE 30 HD conventional motor oil along with Red Line Engine Oil Break-In Additive. This additive contains the required amounts of zinc and phosphorous (ZDDP) anti-wear components to reduce camshaft and valvetrain wear. Follow the application instructions on the bottle. Do not use synthetic or conventional oils of less than SAE 30 weight viscosity to avoid excessive oil consumption due to leaking and/or burning.

Me too, 20W50 for 50 years! And we do a lot of touring, only change oil when it gets black. 1934 Ford's since 1972
