After the car has been sitting for 6 months for winter I went to start the car with no problems but when I was going to move it the lever was very hard to move in the neutral position. Lever moves very freely from reverse to first and second to third but in the center first to second it’s hard to shift does the rubber in the shift column need lube or what’s my problem? Thanks John

Go over all your linkage and make sure there are no worn items.

Apply some chassis lube grease to the shift levers at the base of the steering column. Also use some silicone spray on the rubber grommets in the shifting system.

If it shifts hard going from 1st to 2nd, the lengths of the rods which connect the shift levers at the bottom of the steering column to the levers on the transmission may have to be adjusted to enable a smooth transition from the 1st-reverse plane to the 2nd-3rd plane.

To adjust the shift rods so they are of the proper lengths for a smooth transition between the shifter planes, remove the rods from the shift levers at the base of the steering column, make sure the transmission is in neutral and the gear shift lever is in the neutral position, rotate the shift rods so that they both easily fit into the levers on the steering column. Put the washers and cotter pins back into the shift rods and verify that the gear shift lever easily moves through all of the gear positions.
