  looking for correct vacuum diaphram that screws in at intake manifold to service both wipers and distributor brake.

  For 41 there is a special bolt, two brass washers and the steel vacuum line with fittings.

  yes ,and I will. mine snapped off upon engine install. if I put a plug in place temporarily, i'll have no wipers or vacumm brake on my distributor. Do I dare break in my engine with no vacuum advance (brake)?

  What if I block the intake port and initially fire this engine without a vaccum brake. Will it ping on acceleration,do any damage?

  The fuels available today are far superior to the gasoline used prior to 1948. Provided your Flathead is stock and you haven't raised the compression ratio, you should be able to back off the vacuum break to where it is totally out of operation with no ill effects.
