I have trouble connecting the air filter to the carb. Does the end of the filter go over the raised ridge on the carb? Should there be a gasket present? THANKS!

Yes the neck of the filter should fit over the flange on the top of the carb. The correct filter should have a matching flange. Some carbs had a straight neck, these were designed for the standard air filter. The oil bath filters had a bulge at the base which matched the flange on the carb. The straight necked filter will not fit on the carb with a flanged top.
