Topic: Door Latch Adjustment

V8JR    -- 02-24-2024 @ 6:38 PM
My 40 Ford coupe has Door latch that does not retract far enough back into the door to easily clear the latch striker plate. The door sticks in the closed position and great force and a thin wedge is required to force the door open.
Is there an adjustment that can be made or other fix to get the door latch to retract further into the door to gain more clearance from the striker plate?
Thanks for any suggestions

If this issue is happening when you use the outer handle, then most likely the latch is worn. I'd suggest you remove it from the door, inspect it carefully and either repair it as necessary or replace it with a NOS mechanism.
If this issue happens only when using the inside handle, then most likely the adjustment to the inner handle mechanism needs to be modified.
If this happens when using either the outer handle or the inner handle, most likely the latch mechanism is worn badly.

I agree with Kube. Sounds like a worn door latch. I suspect it is on the driver's side door.

Kube - Thanks for the insight. It is the outside handle (passenger side - driver side is fine). I could adjust the inside handle it it opens the door ok. I can see that the latch does not retract as far with the out side handle so as you thought the latch must be worn. Any ideas where to get a NOS latch. I looked for a re- pop but all are out of stock. Any knowledge of services that can rebuild a latch?
Thank - V8JR

A NOS passenger latch should not be to hard to find. Go to the Fordbarn and check with a member there called Barnfind. He has lots of NOS parts. The alternative would be to post a want ad on this site.
