I have done this. I cut the protruding part off flush with the housing. Then drilled out as much of the core as necessary. I then placed the new stud in the hole I'd made and welded around the housing / stud. Oh, I did bevel the stud a bit for a better weld penetration. Working well to this day after many miles and many years. Mike "Kube" Kubarth
