Topic: steering box change

If I change the steering box on my 36 to a 37 box, do I need to change the bracket and the pittman arm? Thanks...

If I remember correctly, the pitman arm can be the same, but you need to drill at least one mounting hole in the bracket to use the 37 box. Changing to the 37 bracket, you can reuse the 36 bracket mounting holes.

  Thank you!

I replaced both the mounting bracket and drop arm on my '36 with '37 parts.

Drilling the '36 mounting plate off was not terrible, but I did have the engine out. Then I used bolts with all steel lock nuts on them to fasten the '37 mount.

A friend left his '36 plate in and drilled the other hole, but now his steering wheel is just a little off-set to the left as I recall.

I did also replace the drop link. To get it to set properly I had to get a big enough socket to go over the threads then hit the socket wiht a hammer before I tightened the nut down, otherwise the shaft just spun.

I changed the steering gear box in my 36 coupe in 1955 from the '36 to a '40, the 40 is the same as the 37 and later.
I ended up having to change the frame mount, which was quite difficult cutting the rivets. I used grade 8 bolts to re-attach the mounting plate. For added safety I put a couple of spot welds, bracket to frame.
I found that the '36, and later Pitman arm would not work, it hung down to low and looked dumb.. In time I found out the common way to correct the angle of the pitman arm was to heat and bend it... Did not like that idea.
I kept looking for a pitman arm that would fit correctly, in time I found that the arm from a '47-48 Ford #21-A3590-3 015 fit perfectly with no alterations.

The steering box bracket or mounting may vary between model years. Check the design and attachment points to ensure that the 37 box fits properly onto the existing bracket. If there are significant differences, you may need to modify or replace the bracket.

if you use a 37 steering box,
you could use 37 spindles and tie rods. drag link etc, king pins,
this is the easiest, everthing lines up.
the steering wheel for straught ahead is adjusted by the drag link bar,
my 2 cents 37 Ragtopman,Maine
