Safety. No doors get opened in the face of oncoming traffic. Those were the good old days when they still taught elementary physics in schools.

To add to Daves answer, old Henry was also thrifty. So if door locks possibly cost 50 cents each then not putting them on the driver's door of a million cars he saved $500,000 over the competition who put door locks on both doors.

The answers to why Henry Ford did this or didn’t do that are not always as clear cut and logical as this one. He was obstinate, demanded loyalty to the Nth degree, making questionable decisions often to prove his power and the loyalty of his employees. At the same time, he was also very capable of doing the expedient thing, confounding those who thought they had him figured out. An example of his expediency being his including electric lighters in his Fords, which he insisted they be called cigar lighters, even though he felt very strongly about, and lent his name to a personal campaign against the unhealthy habit of smoking (cigarettes). watch some TCM old 30s40s movies and see when parked curb side wheather the car is parked downtown or in residential area the people most generally slide in from pass side. Tom.

3w2 has this absolutely correct. Even now, in 2023, it is still illegal to enter / exit a vehicle into traffic, at least in Wisconsin. Yes, everyone does it. Get your door ripped off because of it and you will be ticketed and held at fault. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

Be VERY CAREFUL with those locks. If you or a passenger thinks they are helping to lock the car as they exit and lift the inside handle to lock it, the car CANNOT be unlocked using the key from the outside. For my coupe, I try to remember to leave the rear window rolled down just a half inch or so, so I can get a long wire in there if it gets accidently locked. Steve in Denver

Modern cars have electric locks, activated with your electronic key fob. There will be one mechanical key slot on the car in case the electronics fail, typically on the driver's door.
