Topic: 1947 Ford coupe rocker stainless install

My running boards are the aluminum type with no rubber. I was able to remove the stainless trim and the bottom vee shape that hooks on the lower edge of the aluminum running board had a black hard material that looks like it was applied before the trim was installed. The black material fell out and now the trim is loose. I am looking for suggestions what the black material is and what have other restorers have done when installing the running board trim. Thanks in advance for the replies.

I have aluminum running boards, don’t believe there should be, perhaps the V in bottom of trim is spread to wide because of spacer used. I would try & tighten up the bottom V
