Pulled the rear apart on my 48 to replace right side axle, I left center in car & hooked to torque tube, I did check for end play, did not measure because I believe there should be none. I have not pulled center section out yet but was hoping to get some ideas on possible cause. What are you working on, a 1948 car or a truck? What was wrong with the axle that made you tear it apart?

Working on a car, the threads were wiped out , axle could not be saved. Was also wondering if any one has ever replaced the pinion pilot bearing retainer, it is riveted on .
