I am very new at this. Just inherited my Dad's 34. I am having battery issues. I noticed that folks recommend the optima battery, but if I may sound ignorant, which one? The smaller one or the square one?

6 or 12 volts? Take some measurements of the battery you select and your cars' battery box...

6 volts. Under floorboard. Thank you. I would like to know what other folks are using in their '34 Ford

If the picture you posted is the car you inherited, you have a most desirable jewel of a car there, do nothing to modify it that cannot be undone in the future. Original battery is no longer available. It was 6 volt, the "smaller" Optima being 6v. The larger rectangular Optima is 12 v. Both are "Red Top" Optima. Neither of the two is sized as the original battery was, but both are capable of mounting in any position vertical or horizontal. The original setup was Pos ground, and should remain so. From your post, it sounds like you have zero clues about these old cars, so go slow and take care to know what you're doing before digging in. Best to join the EFV8CA and a EFV8 Regional Group near you to befriend and seek knowledge and help from experts near you. Look to the Regional Group Directory on this Website to find a local group. Good luck and we all envy you and your beautiful Ford V8!

Thank you for the compliment on my car. I do know something about the car and do not plan on altering it whatsoever. Just wanted to know what the best replacement battery would be and of course it fitting in the floorboard.
Thanks again, I appreciate the input.

I think that the 6 volt red top Optima is the way to go.I have used them on a 1931 Model A under the floor in my '37 Ford and now my '55 Thunderbird. If the mounting under floor battery box or tray is similar to Model A a hold down is made for them. I have bought last couple ones on Amazon and had free shipping. No battery acid so you can mount anyway you want.

Thank you for the input. I did put in an optima 6 volt. With the help of a friend, we dropped it in with 2 2x6s on one side and a 2x6 on the other. Also added a strap to hold it tight. I'm happy to say it fit perfectly. No movement whatsoever. My 34 started right up. ??
