Topic: Mystery transmission

  Hi:
When I bought my 37 Ford Phaeton, the seller gave me a spare transmission that he had laying around. It is a flathead tranny but is missing the top casting that the shift lever comes out of. There is no serial number stamped on the bell housing above the clutch access cover...from careful cleaning I observe that there has never been a serial number stamped on it...it is a virgin cast surface. Can anyone tell me how I can go about identifying this tranny? If I posted photos of it on this website could anyone identify it?

I've read that service replacement transmissions had no vin number. If there is a casting number, maybe it will shed some light. Pictures always are welcome.

on the rear of the trans case is a number-starts with an 18 or 48 or 78 for top load cases followed by 7006. 78 being the case that would have come in 37 up cars- this will narrow it down a little further-if you take a picture of the gears from the top experts may be able to ID the synchronizer to narrow it down further

Take a picture of the trans gears. If the synchronizer has a pair of brass plates with teeth around it, it is a "39" style trans. If it has no blocking plates it is an earlier trans. Would need to see the gears for further designations.

  Hi Guys:
Sorry it has taken me so long to get some photos of the trans....anyway, here they are and let me know if there is anything else I can do to help someone identify this transmission. I tried to count the teeth on the gears you see but it was hard because the shaft will not rotate right now...anyway here is my count:
-rearmost gear: 31 teeth
-middle gear: 23 teeth
-front gear: 17 teeth

If I'm not mistaken, your transmission is from a '48-'52 Ford half ton pickup with floor shift, judging from the open, splined output shaft at the rear.

  Hi Carchaelogist:
Thanks for the information!....I will have to see who could use this tranny (or parts) in my neck of the woods.
