Does anyone have a way of decoding a vin on a 1948 Mercury convertible. Turns out the paperwork says Ford not mercury. I am hoping it is a motor vehicle error.

The Ford and Mercury serial numbers are in the same series and format for 1948. The serial number just identified the engine number and horse power. Manufacturers di not start using VIN numbers until 1954 and the format was first standardized in 1984. Tom
