Topic: Some 37 Ford coupe questions

I just purchased a 37 five-window coupe and have a couple of questions:

1. Where should the spare tire be stored in the trunk? I read in the instruction book that the spare is stored behind the front seat (in the trunk) in the three passenger car. There isn't any indication that it is attached with a holddown bracket in the coupe.

2. I filled the tank with gasoline and the gas gauge is now stuck on the "empty" mark. Could the tank float be stuck? Can I get to it from the access plate in the trunk? If so, what can I do to fix it? Has anyone out there had that problem?

3. I live in a state with two license plates. Where can I find a front license holder bracket?

4. What oil is recommended for a 24 stud V-8 engine? (I don't know the year, but is later than the 21-stud 37)

5. Is there an early V-8 group for the 37?

Thanking you in advance..........

I would suggest you get a copy of the V8 Club restoration book.
1 if you have a split bench seat the spare is behind the drivers side seat, not in the trunk., if not it lays flat in the trunk on the drivers side forward.
2 you can access the sending unit through the panel in the trunk floor It is possible the float has stuck, but even more possible the sending unit has lost a source of a good ground, before removing the sender attach a wire from a good ground source to one of the screws holding the sender in the tank and see if the gauge is working if so you may have to clean the ground path by loosing the mounting bolts and retighting, both the tank and the screws holding the sender into the tank.
3 you should be able to find the plate bracket in any number of aftermarket suppliers to the hobby such as Bob Drake, Mac's, C&G there is a very long list.
4 seems a lot of guys use Rotella T 20-50 oil but there a lot of good oils on the market do use a detergent oil. and do not overfill, about 4 quarts without a filter watch the dip stick.
5 there is the one national group for all the club and "local" regional groups, they do not specialize in any one year, but I am sure you will find someone locally to help you. I believe the list of the regional groups is on this web site. Good luck!

As far as the front license plate, check with your DOL and see if historic plates waive the front plate requirement...many do! Plus, you only pay one time.

  37coupeman
also it is possible the NEW GAS, has destroyed the CORK FLOAT, and know will not float in the gas,
if that is the case,, you could order a new float from SNYDERS ANTIQUE AUTO PARTS,
its the one for MODEL A'S out of the modern material.
you might have fabricate it a little to make it work but that should not be to hard, its only about $3.95 part number is A-9313-C Phone number is 1 888 262 5712
hope this helps
