Does anyone know how to remove the fuel tank from a '38 without raising the body? I know there was a discussion about this last year but I can't find it. Thanks.

I just got online, (I'm old and forget about all the stuff you can find on the internet), and found that it can be removed without loosening the body bolts. Seems like a difficult job but I am going to give it a try. Mine is so rusty the car won't run without filling the carb and the filter I installed with rust. I always keep the tank full but it is the original 85 year old tank. At 81 I'm kinda rusty too.

  Hi ya George,

One must also remember that not everything online is correct / accurate.

You do NOT have to lift the body to remove your tank. Lord knows I have R&R too many to care to recall.

Remove the two bolts from the left side and the one bolt from the right side. Remove the filler tube and hose. Remove the fuel line fitting from the tank and pull back an inch or so.

Now comes the "fun" part.
Push the tank as far to the left as possible and drop the tank from the frame on the right side. It is a close fit but will come out of there.

If you intend to install a Drake tank, be aware they are a tad wider than the authentic tank. You can deal with this discrepancy in one of two ways. 1) lift the back of the body. Not my preference.
2) trim the tank width being certain to stay away from the welds. Trim as much as you are able from the right side.

You don't need to raise the body. It will come out with a little work. Follow Kube's instructions.
