I would consult a good upholstery shop in regards to dying a top. You might be better off just living with the faded top.

I would consider a faded top in the category of patina. Nothing more attractive than patina, and bonus points for convincing your wife that you believe it.

Dying the fabric may lock-in the particles that soiled the fabric and/or may result in an uneven or blotchy result. Generally, as can be seen in your photo, the degree of soiling varies depending on how ponding of rain water occurred and where the fabric has laid in framing members vs where it did not. Consider options before proceeding. In any case, the fabric should be removed for whatever treatment you choose ... treatment in-place can result in uneven results. It is probably unknown as to any water proofing that might have been applied to the fabric before installation or thereafter. If you prefer to try to restore the original color or reduce the the staining you could contact a museum which restores fabric/paper articles or has them restored by outside specialist. Depending on the the material, those people sometimes use a blotting pad material beneath and apply a solution of ethanol and distilled water above to dissolve out the stain/soil. It may take more than one application. PM me for contact info re a well-known and accredited restoration company that might give you some informal advice.
