Topic: New Stromberg Big97 vs New regular 97

Going to buy a new Stromberg carb.. I see they have the original type 97 around 162 cfm, and a Big97 around 250 cfm.
The Big97 is actually a little less money and is in stock at Summit.
Don't want to over carb.

Stock 59AB

Any thoughts?

Before you change I recommend asking the advice of Charlie Schwendler who has been rebuilding carbs for decades. (716) 662-9159 or cas5845@yahoo.com. He likely knows the differences in construction of the carbs you mention and what if any effect the change would have.

Otherwise I can only add that there was another long-time carb rebuilder fellow in CT (whose name escapes me) who retired about 8 or 10 years ago, who was of the adamant opinion that one should stick with whatever stock carb type came on the engine.

Ken Isidor from CT is another long-time carburetor rebuilder. The last contact info. that I have for him is igadore@sbcglobal.net (203) 260-9780. Going to a larger carburetor on a stock engine may not be a good idea. You want the airspeed through the venturi area to be sufficient to provide enough fuel at the lower engine speeds where you do most of your driving.

Sadly, Ken Isidor passed away December 29, 2022...

Sorry to hear of Ken's death. I dealt with him a number of times and bought some of his close-out stock. He was a very knowledgeable asset to our cause.

You have a stock 59AB. The original carb provides the proper air/fuel ratio. To use more air/fuel, you need to increase rpm. Your stock engine can't rev fast enough to make use of the extra flow. It would be like having a 4 barrel and only being able to use the primaries.

With some valuable guidance from Mad Max Musgrove, I bought the smaller 9510A-VP Stromberg the VP has a vacuum port for the distributor.

Max is the Go To guy for the 97 he has new hand throttle linkage as well as other replacement parts.
