Please help a newbie. I know that after draining the oil from my 1948 flathead I need to replace the fiber gasket on the 1-1/2 inch drain plug. What I don't know is (1) whether the gasket should be installed dry or coated with oil before tightening the plug and (2) how tight to torque the plug. None of the books or manuals I've consulted touch on that.

It takes a copper crush type gasket. I doubt it makes any difference if it's lubed or not. Better have your drain pan ready when you remove it..... 1 1/2 inch.... oil comes out fast.

The ones in the pic that '36 posted are NOS. The aftermarket gaskets that I got from Carpenter for my '46 Coupe are fiber. I put a light wipe of oil on the gasket, and I don't think there is a torque spec available. If you have done a bit of "wrenching", you will know how hard to pull on the wrench. When my Grandson asks me for a torque spec for some fastener that is not critical, I tell him to use the goodentite spec.
