I am replacing the clutch in my 48 Mercury. Since the transmission will be out, I want to repack the U joint with new grease. What is the best type to use and how much should I put in or should I use the grease zerk on the lower 1/2 moon shaped cover? Thanks, Bill Large

Try using John Deere Corn Head grease, available at JD Farm stores like Hutsons. It is soft at room temperature so it won't channel like a stiff chassis grease. Just pump it in with a regular grease gun. Don't overdo it. It is also EP rated so it should work well in your U-joint. Corn Head grease also is a good lube for steering gear as it is thick enough to stay in the steering box even if the seals are starting to go bad.

The Corn Head Grease will probably work alright. The reference book (owner's manual) for a 1941 Ford - I don't have one for a '48 Mercury says to use "UNIVERSAL JOINT LUBRICANT (Cylinder Oil Soda Soap Grease)" in this universal joint and to apply it via the grease fitting every 1000 miles!

A noted fella on the Ford Barn "A" Forum uses Mystyque grease (it's red)). FWIW Paul in CT
