Topic: Rebuilt ignition coil

  Hello everyone,

Searched for info on ignition coils. No luck. I'm looking for the person who rebuilds them. I bought 2 from Carpenter which were no good. Tried C&G but he says they get theirs from Carpenter. So i would like to get my old one rebuilt as when it is hot the car won't restart. OR does anyone sell new coils that y'all know will work?
I appreciate your help.
Brad

If you are willing to use a "modern" type of cylindrical coil, you can purchase one from Fifth Avenue Antique Auto Parts for a reasonable price. These folks supply parts for the cars that participate in the Great Race so you know their parts are reliable.
You can reach them at (785) 632-3450.

A word of warning, I sent a coil to Skip for rebuilding. He told me that it was a Bob Drake one and was not rebuildable. He was kind enough to send me another one though. You can ID a Bob Drake by "BD" after the serial number.

I have quite a few original coils that I've had in my spare parts stash for many years.. I've never seen a serial number on any of them..

Recently had Skip Haney rebuild one. Excellent workmanship, fast turn around. When I originally contacted him, he did say there are some coils manufactured overseas that he can't rebuild. He said that they may or may not have a Ford logo on them. Said as long as I didn't buy the coils recently, they are probably rebuild-able.

Sorry 36, I think it was a part number with the BD suffix. I'm 95 miles from the car now but will double check that when I get back there.

Robert, no reason to be sorry, I'm only familiar with the intake manifold mounted coils that were used with the "Crab" distributors. Maybe the coils mounted directly to the distributor have numbers on them.

The ones I have only say BAT and DIST next to the terminals Some have the Ford script in the center and some don't . Skip said the presence of the Ford logo means nothing.

I'd like to thank you all for your input and help. I called Skip yesterday morning and sent my old coil out in the afternoon.
We talked about the coils I had bought that didn't work because I planned on taking one apart to see how it was built. He wished me luck as the coil is full of epoxy which is why it can't be rebuilt.
