Topic: 1938 85hp Points and Timing

Dream38v8    -- 05-07-2023 @ 9:21 AM
To the best of my knowledge my 85hp '38 hasn't had a tuneup in 20+ years. I purchased the car in '16 and the previous owner purchased it in '02. I've replaced the plugs, coil (Skip) and condenser. I have not touched the dual distributors. I've replaced points. condenser, plugs and adjusted timing on cars since the early '60s, but no flatheads. Also in reviewing the '38-'39 Book I found not mention of points, etc. My questions are 1) where do I puchased the best points 2) how to adjust the points and 3) how to set the timing?

Thanks,
Ray

You can purchase the points, condenser, rotor and other ignition parts from Van Pelt Sales. This diagram shows how to set up the points if you don't have the proper distributor machine.

NAPA has good points. To get the proper distributor function I would send the distributor to Skip Haney he can time it on his machine and check mechanical advance. The engine does not have a timing mark for TDC .

  What he said.
This dual point distributor was designed to be removed from the vehicle and timing adjusted on a machine. Easily done (not expensive) by someone with the machine and experience doing it. I know some guys attempt to do it themselves, but I would not.
