Did you take of the top of the transmission or just remove the shift lever?

In any case the transmission and top cover must both be in neutral, then the shift lever should just fit in the slot in the top cover. If you took off the top cover, you must have the shift forks in neutral and guide them into the grooves on the synchronizer and the low/reverse slider gear.

I just removed the gear shift, not trasmission cover. It's possible that it was not in neutral when I removed it. Will this be a problem?

Attached is a picture of a double detent top showing the rails lined up in neutral. The single detent top will look the same. Use a big screwdriver to shift the rails into the neutral position, so the two rails are lined up with each other. I was told many years ago that it should look like an "H" looking down into the trans. Make sure you don't drop the small alignment pin into the trans.
