You should also check the front wheels for toe-in or toe-out, or have a shop check the front end alignment. A vehicle with toe-out may have a tendency to wander.

I bought TOE PLATES, on line; about 4 years ago for about $69.00. They come with a MAGNETIC TAPE measure, and are easy fot one man to to use. Most cars get about 1/16th toe in; WITH THE WHEELS STRAIGHT AHEAD!(if my memory is right); but check the specs for your car. Regards, Steve Lee

The problem of excess play in the steering wheel is usually caused by worn tie rod ends, worn drag link ends and lastly by a worn roller or sector. Wander is caused by worn parts listed above as well as worn king pin bushings and toe-in adjustment. I check for worn parts by jacking up one wheel and try to turn it to the left and right of the car. If you get any movement, you have worn tie rod ends or drag link end or an incorrectly adjusted wheel bearing. Next I try to move the top and bottom of the wheel in and out. If you get any movement, the king pin bushings are worn. Tom
