Topic: Right hand 34 tudor

  Dear group,
I have a right-hand drive 34 Ford tudor sedan under restoration to driver status. The exhaust goes down the left side of the car. I would like to find some left side exhaust system components with correct bends. Anyone know if these are available anywhere? Overseas?

  Esteban:

If you have access to a good, well equipped non-franchised muffler shop with a power bender, you could most likely have all the pieces custom bent. For example, when I replaced the exhaust system on my 38, I was appalled at the dismal quality of the components, even though they had the correct bends. Accordingly, I took the pieces to my 2nd generation local muffler shop, and had them match the bends. For the "collector" pipe, I had them bend the parts, and then I fitted and welded them up on the car. They could have done the same thing, but I didn't have the engine running, so elected to do it in my shop. Essentially, I would "guess" (having never seen a RHD 34), that everything is a "mirror-image". I know that on my 38, the frame X-member contains all the holes and reliefs needed on both sides for pipe routing. Another "SWAG" (Systematic Wild-Assed Guess) would be to appeal to our Brethren in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Since they all read this forum, perhaps one will chime-in.

Estaban, The old fords used identical tailpipes and mufflers, whether used on the left or right sides. What would be different would be the crossover, both manifolds, and the collector to the muffler.

  Alan,
The bends on the exhaust and tail pipes are also reversed. I have tried to use the right side pipes on my left side from the crossover but it doesn't match up.

Estaban, I was speaking of the tailpipe, from the muffler back. This pipe should be bent with up and down bends only, which was as original. If yours turns left and right as well as up and down, it was made incorrectly. Remember, the exhaust system was always the first to be replaced on the old cars, and in the old days, most any gas station could do it.
