Topic: carb and dist

I am still trying to get the right stuff for my engine and now don't know what dist. or carb I need
My engine is a 1950 8BA 4" x 3-3/8" with a JR 400 cam and a single carb. My timing cover is aluminum and will accept the cast iron type dist. I want a distributor with both mech and vac advance. I guess I have learned that my cam will not allow just vac advance, and my old Stromsburg 97 carb will not work because of no vac port in it. Is anyone running a setup like I described and can tell me what I need. The car will be for street use only by a OLD man.

thanks

You may want to post this on The Ford Barn too where there are more "modified" engine guys. I ran a Ford, Holly 94, stock carb with the stock distributer and an Isky Max 1 cam with no problems. Not sure why the Jr. cam wouldn't be o k too.

Suggest you contact Charlie Schwendler. He is top notch on 94 carbs and he converts Chevy distributors for use on 8ba's. He rebuilt the 94 on my 8ba and it ran like a top right out of the box. Also, I'm running a mechanical only Chevy distributor that Buba on the HAMB converted but he is no longer doing them. But Charlie does conversions and from what I understand they are every bit as good. If you want to stay with a 97 Uncle Max is a good source for info:

Charlie's contact info has been posted on various forums so no worries about it being posted here.

A common match on slightly modified 8BA engines is using a '49-51 Mercury intake manifold bored to accept a Rochester 2G carb from early Chevy v8 engines. It has more flow that a 94 or 97 and has ports for timed or manifold vacuum. Paired with a converted Chevy distributor with vacuum and mechanical advance will run great on your engine. Your cam will make enough vacuum off idle to take advantage of the vacuum advance.

what type of fuel pump? these carbs don't like fuel pressure over 2.5 pounds. My 3x2 41 Ford has this system

  I also rebuild 94 and 48 and 97 carbs
