I recently purchased a 35 5 window coupe with its stock 221, going up the bigger hills in my area it won't maintain the 45 mph speed limit (drops down to 35 or so) is this normal with these 85 hp cars, or am I dealing with a tired or poor running engine?any input would be greatly appreciated.

There are several things that affect the amount of power available from a stock engine. Among these are the rear axle ratio, the overall gear ratio and altitude. If you live in the Denver or another area significantly higher than sea level, you will experience a reduction in power. You should be able to shift down to second gear to provide enough power to maintain 45 MPH at areas around sea level.

Making the following assumptions: your tires are the stock 6.00X16 size with an aspect ratio of 90%, your rear axle ratio is the stock 4.11:1, your 2nd gear ratio is 1.60:1 and you don't want to rev your engine over 3800 RPM (the power peak), 2nd gear is safe for 46 MPH. If you have the stock 2.82:1 1st gear ratio, 3,800 RPM engine speed in 1st yields 26 MPH. Your top speed in 3rd gear at 3,800 RPM, providing your engine has enough power will be approximately 74 MPH.

I'm thinking that this low power issue could be due to so many different things, that we on this forum can't really give any meaningful advice. My only advice is to join your local Regional Group, have someone with experience drive with you on those hills.

Check to be sure you are getting full travel on the throttle, sometimes the linkages get bent. Charlie Stephens

These are not the most powerful cars in the world especially compared to a modern car. That said, how steep and how long are the hills you are trying to climb? Pull the spark plug wires off one at a time, and hold them to the head. You should see a bright blue spark about a quarter of an inch long. The engine should drop 50 to 100 rpm when you ground the plug to the head. If you have a good spark and no rpm drop there are problems with that cylinder. Changing to a new set of name brand spark plugs would be a good start. I would bet a good tune up would help a lot. New plugs, points, condenser, rebuilt coil, new plug wires, carb rebuild, may be needed

When going uphill, pull the choke out ever so slightly and see if that helps. Mine used to struggle a bit under load, pulling the choke a bit helped by giving a little richer mix for the carb.

What you need to do if there is a problem., and exactly what it is... before starting to replace parts that are not needed STEP ONE,,,, I would first take a compression test. to see if al 8 cylinders are up to par, if comprssion is off nothing you do will help, do a dry compressiong test FIRST then do a wet compression test to see if it increases compression, this will test if the valves or rings are at fault you can also do a VACUUM GAUGE TEST. to SEE WHAT READING'S you get, most vacuum gauges explain what the reading are and check for full throttle at the carb with someone pushing the gas pedal to the floor, to see if linkage is adjusted I have a 37 85 hp and it runs with plenty of power , even up hills most in 3 gear with no problems if compression is OK and carb has full throttle Also check your fuel supply, fuel pump press and it if is pumping correctly enough of fuel and if it is old and maybe dirty usr fresh fuel to all tests you can disconnect the fuel line front and rear and blow out the front to rear line, be carefull see if any dirt is in the fuel system hope you read this post, hope it helps 37RAGTOPMAN /Maine
