What would cause a good spark on one cylinder and a weak spark on some others. Checked my plug wires and some gave a nice strong spark on two cylinders and rest weak spark, should I be looking at points, rotor. What does the condenser do ??.Johna

John, It depends on how you are checking the spark. If you are leaving the wires attached to the plugs, and using a screwdriver to see how far the spark jumps to ground, it could be that the one with the good spark is on a cylinder that is not working as efficiently as the others.

If you are disconnecting the wires at each plug and holding the wire near a good ground, it could be rotor to cap clearance, corroded wires or distributor cap.

The condenser helps to generate a high voltage spark and protect the points from arcing.

You can do a cylinder balance test by shorting each spark pug wire to ground and noticing the effect that it has on the engine RPM. Each cylinder should cause the same decrease in RPM when the wire is shorted to ground.

Why do you keep opening new topics when you are still trouble shooting the same problem?

Thanks Tomo --still learning how all this works, I understand what your saying, thank-you.

  Tom,

Suddenly no spark to plugs in my 46 stock coupe. All connections clean and tight, beginning with fully charged battery.
Looking for your thread where you discussed step by step procedure in searching for the culprit.
