What is the general consenus of oils to use in a 50s vintage Ford manual transmission and rear end? The originl owner's manual says SAE 80 in the transmission and SAE 90 in the rear end. Certainly there are better modern oils.

The general consensus among automotive enthusiasts and mechanics is to use a high-quality, multi-viscosity gear oil, such as GL-4 or GL-5, for both the transmission and rear end of a vintage Ford with a manual transmission.

SAE 80 and SAE 90 oils were commonly used in the 1950s and are still available, but they are not as commonly used today due to the advancements in oil technology. The use of a multi-viscosity gear oil will provide better protection for the gears and better overall performance, compared to the single-viscosity oils like SAE 80 or SAE 90.

You want oil with a lower GL rating for the transmission. GL-3 if you can find it at Tractor Supply.
GL-5 doesnt have the protection that is needed for the metal in the syncro.

You can use a GL-1 SAE 90 weight gear oil, available from NAPA, in the manual transmission. There is also a GL-3 Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid available from Pennzoil. If your transmission incorporates the available Borg-Warner Overdrive, use a GL-1 gear oil to protect the copper/brass parts in it.

For the rear axle use a GL-5 SAE 80-90 weight Hypoid gear oil.
