Topic: A REBUILT GENERATOR TEST/BEFORE INTALLATION

When I was a young mechanic, Age 23, I had just rebuilt a generator. A older guy said, "Will it work? " He then he proceeded to tell me how to "BENCH" test it (before installing it ) by using jumper cables connected to a battery.

Then I think he said;" Connect the positive end of the cable to the arm post.; and "touch" the negative end to the case; He said, if it is good; it will MOTOR.;and it It did!!"

Is my memory okay as far as the connections?

Regards, Steve Lee

Yes it will motor when hooked up like that . But that is opposite the way it is hooked up when installed.

Thank you; yes I realize that is the opposite of the connections when "in use."

  hey steve,
what happens if you connect the Negative end of the cable to the arm post.; and "touch" the Positive end to the case? I'm guessing it still "motors," but in the opposite direction??
and, if I'm right, which way of connecting the battery makes the generator turn in the same direction as it does on the car?

I have youtube videos showing how to bench test and polarize both 2-brush and 3-brush generators.
