I'm beginning to re assemble my 1937 rear axle. I needed a better ring and pinion set and purchased a used set. The gears are in excellent shape. The set came with the pinion still in its banjo. The pinion bearings also seem to be in good shape and I intend to re use them. The lock nut and keeper plate are set. I thought I'd try and measure the preload on the pinion. It is on the low side about 3 or 4 in-lbs. I know that for new bearings the preload should be 12-15 in-lbs, but what about used bearings? Does the preload reduce after the bearings are run in? I'd like to leave well enough alone if I can. What do you think? Mike
