I have two questions. First, where can I purchase the sound deaden material? Second, is the sound deaden material supposed to be painted the body color or left natural? Thanks in advance for the replies.

As I recall Bob Drake carried the waffle pattern sound deadener. I believe the sound deadener was placed in the decklid prior to the lid being assembled and painted. Hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong.

James, As has been advised, Drake sold it at one time. The paper was in fact installed as a sheet prior to the trunk lid being crimped over the inner structure. There was no masking of this material, so any overspray did "color" the paper. However, after decades, the paper had a tendency to absorb the paint. Photos attached of both a '39 and a '40. Same process as your '47... Mike "Kube" Kubarth
