I am trying to reconnect wiring on the 6 volt positive ground system. How do I check tail lights, etc when my power is in the body\ frame. One end of test light on frame and alligator clip goes where?

The usual simple test lights do not care if you connect either side to ground and the second side to the wire. Try connecting your test light alligator clip to the frame or other good ground and then use the test probe on the black or green wire terminal.

hi Scuffy is the test light 6 volt or 12 volt and did you test it,? the alligator clip should go to a GOOD GROUND, and the needle point should go to the bulb contacts in the bulb holder or wire end, is the battery fully charged and BATTERY Contections REALLY clean and did or can you test it,? HOW OLD IS THE WIRING ? Really need more information, hope this helps 37Ragtopman,Maine

As said above, it should work. Suggest you test your test light by putting the test light leads directly on the battery posts to see how/if it works.

The first thing to check in a vehicle electrical system is the GROUND.. The body has to be grounded to the chassis, on older vehicle s, generally via a braided strap. The chassis has to be grounded to the engine, there again via a braided and/or insulated heavy gauge wire. All of the wiring in the vehicle will generally be the hot wire, the color of the wire will denote the item that is being powered. In a EFV8 and DPCD the electrical system is positive to ground, GM is negative ground, this applies to the battery cables. The hot wire is generally the wire that has a switch in it, however, in some cases the switched wire is the ground.. Courtesy/dome lights usually have this anomaly. ie; the switch is controlling the ground. It is very unusual to have two wires running to a light, accessory, etc. the exception can be stop and/or tail lights. Generally speaking the wire leading to the accessory, etc., is the hot wire, ground is achieved via the mounting of the item to the body, etc. Bill 36 5 win delx cpe

If you use a short piece of insulated wire in the alligator clip you can use the wire as a probe just strip a short bit of insulation off each end. Do make sure the test light works properly.
