Hopeing some one can tell me what this is it was hooked up to the batt and heater wire. while on a trip I reached up under the dash and touched this item and it was so hot it burned my harm. do I need a new one or what? and if i do where do I find one? thanks son of 19

It's a resistor. I suspect your car has been converted to a 12 volt system and is still running a 6 volt heater. Resistors get hot as they drop the voltage to the component.

Thanks for the info. yes it's a 12v so it ok to put it back in place?

You didn't say what year car you have. Also, did you have the heater on? If it was off it should not get hot. The later Ford heaters (46-48) had a switch with 4 terminals on it to run the heater fan motor 2 speeds forward and 2 speeds back (this forced the air into the defroster ducts after pulling the defroster cable). If the switch was on and the motor is bad (not turning) it would get very hot. It gets hot in regular operation. I don't know what the 12 volts would do but guess the switch is not made for it. So, were you running the heater at the time?? The 4 post originals are not being reproduced so are very scarce. I found a NOS one at Antique Auto Supply in Texas. John
