I am new to the EFV-8 club. I just bought my first vintage car, a 1948 Ford Super Deluxe Coupe. It is cherry stock. I was looking to replace the shocks so I looked underneath and saw no shocks in the front or the rear. Am I missing something here besides shocks? I've looked online to learn as much as I can about this and the results are clear as mud. I've seen where Monroe has exact replacements...replacements of what?? I've seen where I can by shock conversion "kits" for about $200 an axle. So, I am confused. I could sure use some guidance here please. I am expereinced at shock replacements as I have done all of the work on my cars back in the 60's and 70's so I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. Any part on the car that looks like this front or rear? The one in the picture is a front found on 41-47 and some 1948's.

The shock that 42Deluxe has a picture of is what the early 48s had and of course looks nothing like a modern tubular shock. Apparently at some point in the 48 year Ford changed over to tubular shocks. You should find one or the other as it is doubtful that the car would not have any.

This style of shock can be rebuilt. They are an adjustable shock unlike the tube shocks. New Old Stock can be found on Fordbarn and Ebay along with this site. If I recall correctly the numbers on the front arms are F924 and the rear are F881. There is a right and left also if I am remembering correctly. According to the 1941-1948 Ford Book offered by the V-8 Club, at some point during the 1947 production run, Ford started using tubular shock absorbers for "Partial Production Only", meaning that the lever action Houdaille Shock absorbers were in the process of being replaced. Some early 1947 car's are known to use the new tubular shock's, while some car's built in the later part of the year were still using the lever type shock. All 1948 Fords were supposedly equipped with direct action tube type shock absorbers although some specimens continue to surface with Houdaille shocks. I would bet that your car came from the factory with the tube type shock. Do not assume that because you have holes punched in the frame that your car had the early shock's, because the new tube type, upper shock bracket used two of the original holes that the lever shocks used. P.S. if you don't have the V-8 Club Book it's highly recommended.

Woodiewagon 46, one of the 12 42-48 Fords I've owned was a 1948 Super Deluxe Tudor with Houdaille shocks. In all other aspects was normal 1948 Ford. Probably the most unusual car I had was a 1947 Ford "bull nose" (no hood ornament). Never saw one before I bought the car nor after I sold it. If the car used tube shocks would it have holes in the front axle to mount the lower bushing/bolt or was another method of attachment used? This message was edited by 1942deluxe on 9-22-22 @ 4:22 PM

42 deluxe, I do remember reading about 1947-1948 hoods with no hood ornament. It was only for a short period of time during the '47- '48 changeover. Hot rodder's must have wanted those hood's so they didn't have to fill any holes when they "nosed" their car.

I used the shock absorber kits on my '47 that I obtained from C&G. (800) 266-0740. The front kit is 11A-18224. The rear is 11A-18125. The kits come with the shocks and mounts. It is unsafe to drive with weak or missing shock absorbers.

These are what I have on my '46 Super Deluxe. They must have been rebuilt at one time by a previous owner, as they work and don't leak. I had to replace the rear shock arm to axle connecting links, as the were worn. I moved the shock arms while they were disconnected, and there was good resistance. The tool I used to disconnect the links is (shown) available from Harbor Freight. The knife is for size reference only.
