Topic: Chassis and Wheel Bearing Grease

Hello - I have a 1940 Ford. I am probably overthinking this but I was curious if anyone has a recommendation on the best grease to use for the chassis and the wheel bearings. Thanks!

For your wheel bearings Use a fibrous grease, usually sold as "heavy duty wheel bearing grease". It is a sticky yellow grease designed for the purpose. The fibers help to distribute the grease in the bearings as the wheels are turning. Chassis lube should not be used in its place. For chassis lube, we use Mystik grease. It is an all purpose waterproof material. I learned about it years ago when the bearings on my boat trailer wheels were failing from immersion. It clings to the joints, and resists water and other road junk.

The lube that I use for my '46 Coupe rear and front wheel bearings is Sta-Lube SL3131. For the chassis I use 14 oz. tube size chassis grease from Mobil.

If you have an original rear axle that hasn't been altered there will be grease fittings where the axle bearings are located. Do not use the same grease you are using for the chassis grease fittings as it will cause these bearings to rapidly fail. Use only wheel bearing grease here.
