I have a '39 Woodie that was passed on to me by my father; unfortunately neither his knowledge nor diagnostic skills came along with it. It's recently started making noise when I'm driving and let off the gas - basically when the driveline is unloaded. Sort of a whining / howling noise which is higher pitched at higher speeds. If I step back on the gas or put it into neutral the sound goes away immediately. It does have a Columbia, and the issue is the same whether the Columbia is engaged or not. Any suggestions about what might be leading to this are greatly appreciated!

One source of this whining on decelerations could be wear on the ring and pinion. When you have the rear axle under a load, the pinion is driving the ring gear and it is silent. When you take the load off of the axle, the ring gear drives the pinion and the wear allows the alignment between the two gears to change producing this noise.

Back in the day, used car dealers employed “auto detailers” whose job it was to do such things as set odometers back and put sawdust in growling differentials. Of course, nowadays, they wouldn’t think of stooping to dishonest means to sell a car, would they? Alan

first thing you want to do is drain the rear , in a clean pan and run a magnet though it and to see if there is any metal particles this would be the easiest way to see if there is a problem in the rear end, also the trans oil could be drained and check that also, hope this helps 37Ragtopman maybe fresh 140 weight gear oil might help

Thanks for the suggestions! I had the rear end drained and the fluid replaced, and the mechanic didn't mention anything. The ring and pinion explanation seems to match what I'm hearing pretty closely. I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area (East Bay.)
