On going problem of no start. New spark plugs in. Cleaned contacts to starter to Pan and ground to chassis. Turns over better but still no fire. I notice that when I put my hand over the carburetor I feel pressure not vacuum. What could I have done wrong? I follow a rebuild book step by step. Greg Meiling 1935 3 Window Coupe

Your cam drive gear is off the mark. Alan

That would be in the front of the engine behind the plate the distributor is attached to. Greg Meiling 1935 3 Window Coupe

That is correct, and that plate is called the timing gear cover. Alan

I notice a tiny notch at the 7 o’clock position. Should the line in the cam gear have been lined up with that and not what I have? Greg Meiling 1935 3 Window Coupe

Based on this photo from an thread about removing the gear with the engine still in the car I think I have the gear miss aligned. Should have used the tiny tick mark. Am I right in my thinking? Greg Meiling 1935 3 Window Coupe

You are correct. That tiny mark on the end of the camshaft is the timing mark. That mark must be lined up with the timing mark (line) on the camshaft gear to insure the valve timing is correct.

We’ll, I certainly never heard that term before. That makes perfectly good nonsense, doesn’t it? Alan

If this gear is pressed on what keeps it from possible turning on the camshaft? Greg Meiling 1935 3 Window Coupe

remove number 1 spark plug, turn the motor over till it hits top dead center, on compression stroke, use a long stiff wire to get the feel, welding rod, 1/16 both valve closed, then, you can see this though the hole with a good light, check were your timing marks are at if off, I would remove the fiber timing gear and check to see if it spun on the metal center, it would have been nice to have the bolt on timing gear, but pressed on can be changed in the car, but not that easy, but it is possible, hope this helps 37Ragtopman
