Topic: Spark plugs

I bought autolite 45 for my early 1935 flathead. They didn’t come with the gasket washers. I notice that the plugs have a tapered area where they should seat to the heads. Is this ok? The reason I bought new plugs was to get gaskets since the ones I have don’t have gaskets and I’m having a hard time getting the engine to fire.

Greg, I believe you have the wrong plugs for your flathead engine. I could be wrong, as I am not that familiar with '39 engines, but I use Autolite 216's in my stock '46 Super Deluxe Coupe, and I think your engine would use the same plugs. Plugs with tapered seats are for more modern overhead engines.

  Woodie
My engine is a 1935: I bought the 216 but the thread size was too small.

What plug do you have that need gaskets?

According to the chart on Van Pelt's site, '38 to '48 recommends Champion H10, which are 14mm. Pre '38 specs lists Champion 7, which are 18mm threads.
The Champion H10 crosses over to Autolite 216

  Hi Greg.

We are running Champion D21 spark plugs in our 1936 Ford's stock 85 hp flathead V8 engine.

The gap is set at .025 inch, as per page 84 of the 1932 to 1941 Ford and Mercury Service Handbook.

Once or twice a year they get cleaned and re-gapped as necessary. Removal and re-installation is done with a 7/8 inch wrench.

hey Gregg, i've gotten the autolite 386s for my '37 from oreillys. Tom. are the plug holes in your motor tapered or flat. if they are tapered the 386 autolite won't work.
