Topic: 1940 drums good to have turned?

I've attached a photo of some 40 brake drums that I'd like to use to convert a 36 from mechanical. I'd like to have them turned if you guys think there is enough metal left...the metal runs from the tape measure at 18 1/4 to about 18 1/2. Also, the published info on these conversions is a little overwhelming, but I plan to use the 36 spindles with the above mentioned drums and backing plates. Do the 36 spindles need a spacer ring? Any other gotchas with the 36 spindles? I realize the original wheels have a wide bolt pattern and are not useable. The car is 8 hours away, so I'm trying to get my ducks in a row before making the trip. Thanks in advance...

  parrish,

When I first saw your photo I thought you were joking with us. Then I realized where the tape was and what you were trying to show. The drums are usually measured across the total diameter (which looked like about 18 inches on your tape). The original diameter was 12.000 inches. The maximum recommended (and in some states the maximum legal diameter) is 12.060. Brake shops will have a tool to make this measurement but you can get a rough estimate with a tape measure. The '36 spindles will require the spacer rings (same as Model A, contact Dennis Cling at clingsaftermarket.com, (480) 777-1202), see https://www.clingsaftermarket.com/addtocart.asp?prod=39&subcat=4). Be sure to contact Richard Lacy, (626) 338-2282, earlyv8@aol.com, about the master cylinder mount he makes. If you want to run the original wheels with the wide bolt pattern there are a few tricks you can do. Ask Richard Lacy when you have him on the phone or post the question.

Thanks Charlie...yes, I was attempting to show that the drums have about 3/16 - 1/4 inch of metal left for shoe contact. Years ago, guys would say anything less that that amount demanded new drums and I wondered if that is still a good metric? Anyway from an original 12.00 inches to 12.060 inches is way less than 1/10 inch wear divided by both sides of the drum...that's 1/20 inch wear....not much metal loss, right?
