The little grease retainers inside the axle housing: Was wondering how is the best way to R&R these seals in the 1936 ford and if they really need to be replaced?? Thanks much for info

Grif: To replace those seals, you must disassemble the rear end and, with the aid of a special tool, press out the old and press in the new seals. For the most part, they don't serve a critical purpose unless you overfill the oil. Often, the oil from the transmission works down the torque tube and causes the rear end to become filled to the point the excess shows up in the rear hub assemblies. The oil level in the rear end should be checked occasionally to drain any excess. If the axle was out for some reason, I'd install new seals. Otherwise, it is better to avoid the extensive work involved.
