I have a 36 21 stud motor that shows in the documentation that the capacity is 5 quarts. However, I changed the oil and only putting in 4 quarts the dipstick shows that is too much. The oil pressure is high with the motor running with just 4 quarts. This car was a foreign built model that has many different parts on it. Does anyone know of a reason that the dipstick would show the oil being over filled with only 4 quarts in it and the oil pressure is showing very high? Thanks Rick

You could have the wrong dipstick or your oil pan may have sludge in it which will throw the reading off. What oil are you using and what do you consider high pressure?

I checked the dipstick and it is correct. The engine has only 1500 miles on it so there should be no sludge. The oil pressure on the gauge goes past the high mark while the engine is cold and is at higher RPM. When the car gets hot, the oil pressure goes down. I have found on this car there are many unique parts. I had to have some rear end work done and all of the bearings, axle shafts, and the rest of the parts were different diameters than the US made cars. I had to acquire an different rear end to replace the old one.

Your oil pressure gauge will indicate high oil pressure if one of the later high volume (80 PSI) pumps was installed during an engine rebuild. Does your engine leak oil past the rear main bearing? Leakage at this point is a symptom of the high volume pump being used in an early engine.

You could install a mechanical oil pressure gauge to verify pressure.
