I've been trying to install a NOS Ford generator belt (78 8620-C) on my 47 Ford V8 59A-B engine. No matter what I try the belt is bout 1/2 inch to small in diameter and/or too wide to fit properly in the generator and water pump pulleys. Has anyone else had this problem or have a special technique to get the belt on the pulleys? Chris

They can be tough to install. What I have done is to remove the generator retaining bolt to allow the generator to be pulled forward and tilted with the front of it facing down to the point where the belt can be slipped onto the pulley. Once the belt is on the pulley, the generator is put back into position and the retaining bolt reinstalled. The belt tension can then be adjusted.

Are you sure that it is a NOS Ford belt and not a reproduction? The repro belts made in the early 2000's were about 1" short and too wide. There is no way to get them on a stock engine. I have one hanging on the wall in my garage. I bought it as a spare and then a couple of years later when I went to use it, I found out why they were always in stock, they are too small. I think that the shortest belt that you can install has a 52" inner diameter. The closest modern belt available is the B 52 available on line and at some hardware stores. You can do a search on "belt" and searching All dates to find many posts on this subject. Tom

HI I found that NAPA has the correct belt for my 38 hp correct length and width it is a special and the correct ANGLE to the pulley and rides correctly in the grove, do not know if they still have a listing, if you have a spare pulley take it with you and compare it but maybe worth a try, you might have to tilt the generator a little forward, just make sure it is not to TIGHT, burn out the generator bearing's my 2 cents 37Ragtopman

Thanks everyone for your insights. A picture of the NOS belt is attached, it looks to be a genuine Ford part to me. I've tried to remove the generator retaining nut and pulling the generator forward and tilting it as far as it will go but, I still can't get the belt on. Can you remove the stud that the generator sits on? Since I'm taking the car to the Western national meet this year to get a Dearborn award I want to get everything correct. It shouldn't be necessary to remove the stud, simply the special nut that holds the generator in place. If you still can't get the belt to fit, remove and measure it. Once you are sure of the required measurement, contact all of the Ford parts vendors and talk with them over the phone to be sure they have a belt which will fit your vehicle. Are you sure the diameters of all the pullies over which this belt rides are of the correct diameters? This message was edited by carcrazy on 3-3-22 @ 5:26 PM

Your pulley diameter should be 3.18. This is measured on the front of the pulley. If the belt has the correct inner diameter, you can try this to install the belt. Make sure that the belt is in the crank pulley, route it so that the right side water pump pulley and the generator have the belt in their pulleys and then try to install the belt on the left side water pump pulley by tipping the generator forward. If you cannot get the belt on, you can try using lacquer thinner or acetone to remove the markings on the NAPA belt. A Sharpie permanent marker will cover some markings without leaving a shiny surface. A belt with no markings should be acceptable to the judges. I haven't tried the latest reproduction from Drake with the raised script and P/N, but that might be another option. Let us know when we can congratulate you on your cars Dearborn Award. Tom

The gen belt that fits my stock '46, 59AB isn't Dearborn compliant, but the info may help you with dimensions in finding what you need. The gen belt is a Gates TR24538, and the dimensions for it are; 21/32 X 54-3/8. The fan belt is a Gates TR26366, 25/32 X 37-1/8. Tom. Thanks for the tip on removing the lettering from the belts. I'll have to try it when the weather is warmer.

It sounds as if you can tip the generator, slip the belt on with some effort and place the generator back in place as carcrazy had previously advised. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

Sorry, but I've tried every possible angle to tilt the generator but, the belt won't go on. Even tried the Drake version, which is narrower and fits into the pulleys better, to avail. I've given up and gone back to the NAPA belt and covered up the markings. Thanks everyone, Chris

hi 47 GENERATOR BELT did you try heating the belt up with a hair dryer to make it more supple and eaiser to slide over the pulleys ? It might even stretch a little . I am sure it shrunk over the years, it might be worth a try, Goodluck with at the CAR SHOW !!! hope this helps 37Ragtopman ,Maine

cknudsen7, If you have the correct diameter pulley (TomO had stated the diameter in his post) then there is no reason your belt should not go on. It is a pain in the butt to install but it does fit. The "A" suffix belt will fit much easier but is not concourse correct. The "C" suffix belt is concourse correct for your car. However, the red area is indicative of a service - replacement part. A good judge will know this and should make a deduction on the concourse. Mike "Kube" Kubarth
