Hello All, I found a local shop who say they can rebuild my '36 Phaeton transmission, but they seem kind of reluctant and admit they've never done one before. I've also spoken to Van Pelt sales and realized immediately that no one could do it better. If Van Pelt would do a rebuild, I'd like to ship it to them so they can do it. Does anyone have any experience shipping early V8 transmissions? Are there special containers/crates I could buy? Once packed up, does anyone know about how much shipping would cost? Thanks So Much, John

I have shipped them in heavy duty cardboard boxes. You need one at least 20 by 14 by 14. U-Haul has solid boxes and cheaper than the office stores. FedEx charges about $150 with insurance from Iowa to the coasts. I wire the trans to a plywood base to prevent it from rocking in the box and add styrofoam packing. I shipped one UPS and they dropped it and would not honor the insurance (they said it is not insurance but a fee based on value and it would have to be double boxed). FedEx has never dropped one for me. You can get an estimate from their web site (assume 75 pounds). This message was edited by juergen on 2-11-22 @ 4:42 PM

Most shippers such as FedEx, UPS, etc. will accept pallets. That is the way we get and ship transmissions. You have to securely strap the transmission to the pallet using heavy duty materials.

Van Pelt will not accept pallets!! I called him a while back and we went all through this on the phone!! He said they can't deliver to his place; (lack of space at his business for the transport vehicle (tractor trailer)with a pallet. He said they would have to go to an open area near him to deliver it; and he won't do that either!! You have to buy a box from him or build one to his specs!! He said you can ship it to him by UPS (United Parcel Service.) Regards, Steve Lee

Use the instructions on Van Pelts website to make your own wooden shipping crate. It's not that complicated John
