Topic: Can A Driveshaft Be Modified

Can a 1936 car drive shaft be modified for a 6 spline pinion. I know you will need an adapter from 10 to 6 but the existing 10 spline end of the shaft seems to hard steel to bore for the adapter.

Yes, the drive shaft can be modified. I had my 1935 (tubular style) drive shaft modified by a local drive line shop. they removed the 10 spline bung, took a 6x10 spline adapter (that I supplied) cut the 10 spline side off, machined the 6 spine bung to fit the drive shaft, and welded it in place

That isn't a hard (no pun intended) job, but should be done in a long bed lathe and welded by spotting a few places before finishing the rest. This keeps the shaft from warping from the heat as the piece is turned. Any slight off center will create a vibration.

I have had a drive shaft shortened and a 35 modified and would only have it done by a speciality drive shaft shop. jmho
