Topic: Which Pressure Plate Should I Use?

  I own a 1947 Ford wagon which is stock except for the 8BA engine.
I recently had the transmission reworked as I was having problems engaging first and reverse without grinding. I discovered that the pressure plate had the longer fingers (Ford style). I had it reworked and had the shorter fingers installed (1949 & 50 Mercury type for the large diameter transmission input shaft). I installed a new throwout bearing. I am still having grinding problems. All the related clutch linkage is new so as to eliminate any slack. For the car to be drivable I have to adjust the free play so the throwout bearing is just off the pressure plate fingers (approximately one half inch at the pedal).
It occurred to me that I am using the Borg & Beck style pressure plate which matches the engine. Should I be using the Long style pressure plate? Does the Long style plate have a different fulcrum point so the 1947 linkage works correct?

I don't believe that I'm the first person to encounter this problem so any insight would be greatly appreciated.
As you know the R & R on the transmission is not the most fun a guy with an old car can have.

  I suspect that you have the earlier 48 style release bearing hub,, rather than the later 8A type, which would account for the lack of release bearing travel. The release fork is also different.
